What is ceramic coating?
Ceramic coating is a protective liquid polymer coating based on nanotechnology for your car’s paint. It is also commonly known as nano coatings, glass coatings and quartz coatings. Ceramic coatings are semi-permanent coatings applied on various surfaces to protect them against environmental damage while making them easier to clean and maintain. Different variants of these coatings are used in industries ranging from automotive, textiles, marine, heavy equipment, construction, etc.
Is ceramic coating good for my car?
When it comes to our roads and the environment, it becomes all the more crucial for car owners to get the best ceramic car coating services in India. Ceramic coatings give your car a slick look, as it resists dust from sticking and makes liquids slide off the surface, thanks to its hydrophobic features.
When you have your car ceramic coated, you get:
– An amazing gloss and mirror-like finish
– Minimises hairline scratches by 60%
– Repels water and dirt that your car encounters outdoors
– Protects against harmful UV rays from the sun and prevents colour fading
How does ceramic coating work on cars?
Ceramic car coatings consist of two components, a resin and a solvent. The resin used is Silicon Dioxide (SiO2), the main element in producing glass. Hence ceramic coatings are also called liquid glass or glass coatings.
Now, you might have noticed that ceramic coatings come inside a bottle. The second component, the solvent, ensures the melted SiO2 remains in liquid form, making it ideal for application on the surface of cars.
A car’s surface paint has micropores. And ceramic coatings are created based on nanotechnology using nanoparticles. These nano-ceramic particles enter the micropores, and the solvent in the product evaporates off, leaving the liquid glass to harden. By entering the micropores of the clear coat on the surface, these nanoparticles form a mechanical bond and a semi-permanent protective layer of glass on the paint. This entire process is called Crystallisation.
Difference between ceramic coated & uncoated surface.
How to know the quality of ceramic coatings?
The quality of any ceramic coating depends on the volume of SiO2 and the grade of SiO2 in it. Any good ceramic coating has over 70% of SiO2 in it. But, it is the grade that matters more than the volume. The purity of SiO2 ensures how good the quality of the coat is, and the percentage of solids in the composition tells how durable it would be.
Ceramic Coating Myths – What does it not do?
“My car will now have no scratches at all!”
Well, sorry to break your bubble, but ceramic car coating will not eradicate the risk of scratching or chipping on your car’s surface. To be very clear, it is not “scratch proof” but resistant to hairline scratches. It does not protect the car’s surface from deep gashes from car keys or rock chips.
“My car is now maintenance free!”
Sadly, this is a myth too! Do not believe anyone who tells you that your car will not need any maintenance upon getting it ceramic coated. The lifeline of any ceramic coating depends on how well you maintain your car. It makes the task of cleaning your car easier. To maintain the insane gloss from the ceramic coatings, you must regularly wash your car with a recommended car shampoo.
“My car detailer tells me his ceramic coating is of 15H”
You’ve got to be kidding us! It seems like this absurd claim is being propagated by someone who has absolutely zero scientific and technical knowledge about ceramic coating and paint protection. The highest grade of ceramic coating is 10H. Where the H stands for the ‘hardness’ of the coating, tested using actual graphite pencils. The pencils’ hardness ranges from H to 10H, we wonder who invented 15H pencils in the first place.
